Caves, wine, Loire River, Sleeping Beauty Castle

Today the weather started out a bit drizzly so we decided to explore some caves first. There are heaps of caves in this area that have been dug out dating back to 15th century when they were building the castles. The one we visited today was making the most of the rapid limestone deposits by placing items underneath the underground waterfalls and within 6 months to 1 year that are what they call "petrified". It looks really amazing! Of course there are all the natural formations as well.
Many of these caves are also used for storing wine due to the constant temperatures - so at the end of the cave tour we got to taste some local wine down in the cave - cool!
After lunch (quiches and baguettes) we set off to the Chateaux Usses - where the story of sleeping beauty originated and which the disney castle is based on. Had lots of fun exploring the tower of sleeping beauty and climbing the spiral staircases.
A leisurely drive along the Loire river has brought us here to Maccas in Tours where we get free wifi and an opportunity to blog!
Life is good.

  1. OMG! This is just like walking down memory lane! Except for a few side diversions, you are pretty well tracing chunks of my travels in Europe post uni and the trip that Tom and I did to France/Spain in 2003. It's wonderful to hear your adventures. I am so green its not funny. You are not only giving me the travel bug again, but making me wish we had gone with our first choice of three months in France, when instead we did the trip around Oz. $$s were the issue for us, but I sooooo wish we could have gone to France (mind you outback Oz was a pretty good consolation prize!). I love the photos - do you guys ever stop smiling??? Make sure you order un cafe noir et une pain chocolat for me somewhere on your travels! Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy! Lots of love, Becky and the Laytons.
